Konnichiwa! It is no secret how much I admire Beatrice “Beato” Wood and try to model myself after her. When I read her letters to Steve Hoag proclaiming that she wasn’t going to return from her visit to Spain until she had, “pinched every Spaniard,” I thought to myself, “Now, that is something I can get behind.” Heading into the third leg of my Japan trip, I have made attempts to cuddle the people of Tokyo, tickle the citizens of Hakone, and caress the population of Kurashiki. While I have been in this country, I have also tried to navigate public transportation, use a bank machine, and eat fish for breakfast…all with very limited amounts of success. At the age of 65, Beatrice navigated herself through Europe. I got lost trying to find a 7-Eleven outside my hotel. If I am trying to be like Beato, I still have a lot of work to do.
