Rosa Bonheur, Ploughing in the Nivernais, 1849. Oil on Canvas. |
The French artist Rosa Bonheur (1822 –1899) was the subject of my undergrad Art History thesis essay. I was fascinated not just by her paintings of strong majestic animals being abused for work and trade, but also by her gender-bending woman-loving lifestyle. I finished my paper as an homage to the pioneering mindset of women artists and have carried that inside me ever since.
Lisa and I founded Beato Chocolates to honor the artist Beatrice Wood, specifically, and as a love letter to the Avant-garde spirit of all out-of-the-box thinkers. Since our government and Google have canceled Women’s History Month, Black History Month, Gay Pride Month, et al., we should remind ourselves daily about the trailblazers who have, and continue to, resist and inspire.
Stay tuned & eat some chocolate,
Heather
