I was 28 years old, wearing motorcycle boots and a leather jacket when I met my mother for lunch at Nordstrom’s café in San Francisco. That was the day I came out to her. She was the only person in the restaurant who was surprised by the news. Regardless of the clues that she failed to pick up, that was, and still is, one of the toughest conversations that I ever had with my mother. Gay Pride isn’t just about a kick-ass party on Santa Monica Blvd. or about applauding the LGBTQ+ community and their allies, it is also an acknowledgment of the difficulty and strength of living an authentic life. If you Fancy a Nut or Don’t, if you want to Dance with Eunuchs or celebrate The Pussy Between Us, maybe you just want to Pinch a Spaniard every now and then; whatever you’re into…this month, we raise a glass and honor our community in all its forms.
